Coach Speak Round 1

November 13, 2019

“Our team never panicked. We played a lot of guys tonight. It’s about surviving and advancing, moving onto the next round.” – Mobile Christian Coach Ronnie Cottrell after his team, ahead 35-6 at halftime, beat Geneva 49-36 to advance to the second round.

“We didn’t make plays when we needed to. They made plays when they needed to” – Vestavia Coach Buddy Anderson, after his team lost a 20-7 4th quarter lead to James Clemens and ended their season with a 21-20 loss.

“We had a great year and turned the corner with our program and, hopefully, we can do better next year. We didn’t do a very good job tonight offensively, but our defense played a heck of a game. The fumble at the goal line hurt us and set the tone for the rest of the night. But I’m proud of our kids to put us in this position. We will come back and be ready to battle for next year” – Helena head coach Richie Busby, after his team lost 17-0 to Clay Chalkville.

“I think the difference came down to we made more mistakes than they did. We had an opportunity to win the game. Give St. Paul’s credit because they turned our mistake into good plays and that is what good teams do.” — Sidney Lanier coach Marvin Cunningham after his team lost to St. Pauls’ 20-14.

“I think that’s one of the hardest things to do. “It’s one of the things that coaches I grew up under, learning how to coach from always worried about was not letting your team get complacent when you’re having a great year. And certainly we have. I think a large part of it goes to our assistant coaches for keeping them level-headed and working to get themselves better. Not worrying about who we’re playing or the competition or whatever but just working to correct our mistakes. The other thing is our senior class. Fifteen in a 1A school is unbelievable and they’re great guys in school and they’re great leaders in this sport and they’ve kept everybody on track.”- Decatur Heritage coach Steve Meek after his team won over Vina 47-8 in the first round of the playoffs.
