The Thompson Warriors won the USA Football/ALFCA 7 on 7 Tournament by defeating Sidney Lanier of Montgomery in the finals of the 6A/7A bracket. The event was held at the Emory Folmar Complex in Montgomery. The Warriors defeated Wetumpka, Hillcrest Tuscaloosa and Hoover in bracket play. Thompson coach Mark Freeman said on Al.com, “I was proud because these things can go up and down. The kids are believing in each other. That’s the biggest thing. Every kid we had did great… We haven’t had that in the past. Seeing them believe in each other and know that good things can happen to them, that’s the biggest win of the day.”
Greenville won the 1A-5A Championship by defeating previously undefeated Andalusia in the finals. The Tigers finished the day with a record of 9-0. Some 32 teams participated in the Regional USA Football Tournament in partnership with the ALFCA. McGill Toolen High School of Mobile won the JV tournament.
Jack Wood, executive director of the ALFCA, said, “We were pleased with every part of the tournament and believe it will only get bigger and better in the future. Combining resources with USA Football and the Central Alabama Sports Commission will give our 7 on 7 a promising future. We owe a special thanks to Steve Bailey and everyone from Montgomery that helped make this a first class event.”
