Under Coach David McKinney's leadership, the Winfield Pirates achieved an impressive 11-2 record in 2024. The season began with a challenging loss to Corner, but the Pirates quickly rebounded, securing 11 consecutive victories.
With a coaching career spanning 12 years at Winfield and an overall head coaching record of 156-57, Coach McKinney has led the Pirates to six 10-win seasons and two undefeated regular seasons. The 2024 Pirate squad won the Region Title for the fifth time under Coach McKinney. This season was particularly significant, as the school broke ground on a brand-new football stadium, symbolizing the program's growth and future aspirations.
David starred as a three sport athlete at Stevenson High School, playing for his legendary coaching father, Kenneth McKinney. He played quarterback at Ole Miss before volunteering as an assistant on his father’s teams at Lamar County. He later helped out at South Lamar before accepting the head job at Gordo in 2007. He won 52 games in six seasons and made the 3A semi finals in 2010 with the Green Wave.
Coach McKinney's impact extends beyond the football field. As Assistant Coach Benji Kelley remarked, "Coach McKinney is not only an outstanding coach, he is also an outstanding father, husband, and friend. David is a leader at Winfield City Schools, as well as in the community."
Coach McKinney's dedication and leadership have solidified his legacy in the city of Winfield, as well as the high school football coaching fraternity.
