Southside Gadsden Names Head Coach

Southside of Gadsden has named Montgomery Academy head coach Gary Nelson as their new head football coach. The Panthers are coming off a 2-8 season and have moved up to Class 6A.

Nelson, a graduate of Alma Bryant High School, played at Huntingdon College and took his first coaching job as an assistant at Hooper Academy. He then spent four seasons as an assistant at Montgomery Academy before becoming the had coach there in 2016.

Philip Bailey, an assistant at the school, has been named to the head job at Jasper High School. He replaces Bryan Moore who left after one season to become head coach at Hartselle. Bailey was an assistant at Eufaula, and before that worked at Maryville College as offensive coordinator and strength and conditioning director. Jasper joins 6A this season and has region foes Clay-Chalkville, Jackson Olin, Gardendale, Pinson Valley, Mortimer Jordan and Minor.

James Moore has resigned as coach at East Lawrence after two seasons. Coach Moore will be headed to Greenville, Georgia to take the job at Manchester High School. He had previously served as head coach at Lamar County for two seasons before coming to East Lawrence. The Eagles’ 5 wins in 2019 was the most for the school since 1997.

Oak Grove has selected former player Zac Glaze as their new head coach. Glaze has served as an assistant coach at Hueytown, Gadsden City, Minor, Hoover and Mortimer Jordan. This will be his first head coaching job. His family has deep roots in the Oak Grove community, where his father played football and mother was a cheerleader.
